"True innovators find solutions to problems, that's why their so successful" - Steve Jobs
Back at the beginning of April, Augusto and I saw that the final due date (May 9th) for the documentary was far from us. Now, May 6th we see it as if it was never far at all. It is actually true, to a certain extent; however, we need to manage our work out for that date.
On Monday morning, we all arrived to school with an important feeling in common, stress. We all felt this because we had to finish our 15-minute video for Thursday. Many of us, not including myself, stayed up till late on Sunday night in order to turn those extra minutes or seconds into mastery.
Why?
While we where in class, we all sat down with the same project in mind, our documentary. Deep down inside, we all felt the urge to tell Mr. Topf if he could please change the due date for our video, but I sensed that no one did because we where so close to the due date. Luckily, two of our classmates, Andrea and Gisella stood up and told him if it would be possible. This meeting was all in private. Soon after, we where informed about the change. This made me think about what a real innovator is all about.
Real innovators find solutions to problems and stand up when no one is willing to. They are natural leaders, they sense when something is wrong and make a change for it. They are always accepting new ideas, acknowledging the fact that they are not always the greatest; they must be informed that everything counts, even the worst ideas.
This was clear that Andrea and Gisella positively impacted all our schedules, a lot. But, above all that, what was mostly shocking about this situation was the courage they had to do it. Ever since we where small, we where told that in order to get an extension you needed to do it with at least one week anticipation; now where we doing it with only a couple days.
In the Innovation Academy there is a strong belief behind quality instead of quantity. We felt that if we where going to finish our videos, rushed, for Thursday it was going to be a much more quantitate piece of work than qualitative. Why? Because we where going to be rushed in order to finish our work, this goes against all our principles.
Planning is a huge deal for me this year; I have learned the art of planning ahead, and still learning day-by-day. There are a couple of important facts you must acknowledge before planning. First and for most, it is not a game, you are planning out at what times you are going to do what. You must then try to write out some important times such, "as begin homework at 6:30pm." B.S as my science teacher used to say. (It is not what you are thinking... it means Be Specific) Finally but most importantly, have it near you all day. With this, you will be able to be aware of what to do and when to do it. Also, you must be faithful to your calendar, if something new and sounds more fun than you homework, set it aside and do what you originally said you would do. Try getting in a habit, that’s the only way you will learn.
