Has it ever happened to you that while you’re at the dinner table with your family everyone's on their phones? Or you're out with your friends, and everyone is checking Facebook? It sometimes feels like the necessity of meeting with someone personally is fading away, because now everything is through tech: you can text them, skype them, or even call them. It’s sad, right? I see this everyday, when I go out to school, or even when I’m coming back from school. People simply can not get their heads and fingers away from their phones. It makes me sad.
The other day, I went to the Ed Sheeran concert, where I had a nice time with my friends, and heard some amazing music. My friends insisted that I go up front, yes where you are so close to the people that the hair of the person in front of you is always in your face and where people usually “po-go”. I wasn’t really up for that plan, but I didn’t want to be alone. As a first time experience, it was awful. You were not able to move because you were so uncomfortably close to people you don't know, and people were screaming as if someone were stabbing them. However, what was even more disturbing was the fact that there were so many phones in the air I could barely see Ed. I was impressed by the amount of phones I saw. Everyone, and I mean everyone was with their phones out filming, snapchatting stories, and taking millions of pictures, that do be honest 90% of them would never go back to see them. I guess, the whole idea of going to a concert is to listen to the artist, and have a great time, not being worried if you recorded “Thinking Out Loud”. A picture or two is fine, but the whole concert? Rethink that.
There is something to be said about techology, that it is designed as a solution for a variety of problems, but I feel it has created even bigger problems. Phones were created in order to make communication faster, not to replace human conversations and meetings. TV’s were made in order to have some time to relax and laugh a little, not to become lazy. It seems as were constantly being distracted by things that are designed to make our life easier and to worry less. But it doesn't go that way, at all. How are students supposed to learn when there is so many distractions?
I’m giving up (some) technology for a change. :’)
Recently, I’ve started to believe that the bigger the sacrifice, the bigger the reward. And for a fact, I see this constantly happening in my life. When I spend less time on the TV, my work efficiency goes up, and when I spend less time on my phone, I become more social. So, for a change, I am giving my the TV and my iPhone. Of course, I need to use my phone sometime during the day, but, my phone will be on “Do not disturb” mode for the whole day. This will disable the ringer if any message has been sent to me. I will only be using my phone for calling and reading Excellent Sheep. I will also try to spend less time on my laptop, and more time on myself and begin swimming again. I want to start thinking about my future, and what will I be doing for the next 5 year in my life?
And as always, thanks for reading.
