On Thursday, the IA spent most of its time conversing about our grades. Grading is something we don't want to do in the IA, because we feel it does not measure how much you learned, but how much you performed on that specific assesment you where given. However, in order to get into college, you will be given a grade to evaluate your performance. Though, we feel that in the Innovation Academy, we should be very transparent in our grading and that everyone should be able to have a voice regarding someones grade. Because of this, we take these conversations very seriously and feel it must be done calmly without any rushes.
Here's why I love doing this.
Originally, teachers were the ones who had a voice on your grade, though, there job was not hard either because they could guild themselves by your past assignments. You could also basically average out your grade before they get it for you, in a sense. Here, we are not basing our grades by exams, because we don't have any. Nor are we basing our grade though lab reports. Were basing our grades though commitment, motivation, leadership and most importantly, attitudes in class. We're all constantly demanding feedback because we are wanting to improve for the good. We do this because we want to be visual and transparent with our grades and if someone does not believe I should get a 7 in English then they have all the power to speak up.
At the end of the day, that's what makes us stronger as a class.
The grade I got in class is not nearly as important to me as it is to see what I can improve on. As a normal human, you try to be as perfect as possible (regularly), in a sense, yet because of this you're blinded to your mistakes. Again, perfectly normal and human. When it got to my turn, and as a class everyone though of the same grade, I was poured with a number of positive comments and also of negative, or in another term, to improve on. I was told sometimes I used the word 'where' and 'were' at moments when they were not needed. Moreover, they suggested I needed to sometimes read over my work a bit more, in order to catch thought errors.
Lesson learned?
Ever since May 2014, I feel I'm not the same anymore. I am dedicating my time to reading, writing and talking with my teachers about business. THats something I would have never imagined. I was told by late June, that if I would continue this process of reading and writing constantly, I would be seeing results at the beginning of next semester (Augusto 2014). Without a doubt, he was right. I am seeing results. Listening to those positive comments about my performed really boost up my mood, and so did the 'to work on' comments. Motivation is something I am driven by, and it's something I'm feeling right now.
